One of my favorite books on the indie-publishing industry is The Naked Truth About Publishing by The Indie Voice LLC. I’ve learned a ton about industry from this book.
Using the author’s strategies, I sold over 50,000 copies of my own books in 2015. I wanted to share a few of the concepts I’ve taken to heart. Maybe they’ll help your inner author prosper.
The Indie Voice LLC (TIV) is a company formed by several talented women (Jana DeLeon, Jasinda Wilder, Denise Grover Swank, Tina Folsom, Colleen Gleason, Jane Graves, Liliana Hart, Debra Holland, Dorien Kelly, and Theresa Ragan), who are now all New York Times, USA Today, or WSJ bestselling authors.
I love these women. They are gurus in the indie-publishing industry. They are making money in their fields (mainly genre fiction)—in many cases earning a HUGE amount. They aren’t afraid to share how much they make and how they do it.
The Naked Truth: Learning from the Pros
It may sound strange to hear this but…
As a writer, it’s important to not get caught up in the details.
Write. Don’t agonize over a word or sentence. If there’s a problem, make a note and move on.
Get it written. As one of the book’s authors, Jasinda Wilder, states:
You can’t fix what doesn’t exist.
The same holds true for publishing your book. I’ve blogged about Jasinda Wilder before. In 2013, she was interviewed on CBS Sunday Morning and reported to be earning $100,000 a month (yes, a month!) as an independent author—no agent and no publishing firm (other than TIV).
Later, Wilder turned down a $1.6MM publishing contract because she could make more money on her own.
All this and she started with no fans, no name recognition. Jasinda Wilder is a pen name.
Strategies for Any Writer (Traditional or Indie-Published)
- Coming up with a business plan
- Pimping yourself out without overdoing it
- Developing you’re A-team (your fans)
- Learning the nuts and bolts about book buying patterns (algorithms, keyword density)
- Making the bestseller lists
- Paying others so you can write
The advice in this book has helped me in my own publishing career.
From TIV, I even found an excellent editor. Faith Williams has edited, proofed, and offered invaluable advice on many of my books. She’s very busy—if you want something done right ask a busy person—so you’ve got to book her in advance.
The second edition of The Naked Truth About Self-Publishing was released in 2015. You can get a copy on Amazon.
